“Barong Tagalog”

Original Text
English Translation
Kung wariin ko sa ngayon
As I reminisce now
ay muling nagbabalik
It comes back
Ang barong Tagalog
The Tagalog attire
na sadyang makisig.
Is truly elegant.
Mahaba-habang panahon
For a long time
nawaglit sa ating isip
We have forgotten
Na ito'y damit ng bansang
It’s the attire of a country
kay hirap malupig.
So difficult to conquer.
Ang barong ito
This attire
ay tatak Pilipinong talaga
Is the symbol of a true Filipino
Dapat nating mahalin sa tuwi-tuwina.
We should love constantly.
Sa sariling bayan nati'y alinsangan
It is quite muggy in our own land
Makapal na kayo'y hindi kailangan.
Thick fabric is not essential.
Ang barong Tagalog
The Tagalog attire
kahit sinamay lang
Although made of hemp
Ginhawang gamitin
Is a comfortable wear
sa lahat ng pagdiriwang.
For all celebrations.
Nang maghimagsik itong ating bansa
When our country revolted
Dahil sa paglaya
To gain independence
Ang barong Tagalog natin ay dakila
Our Tagalog attire attained greatness
Pagka't siyang ginamit ng bayaning namayapa.
As it was worn by heroes who died.

The barong Tagalog (or simply barong, from the word baro) is an                         embroidered formal garment of the Philippines. It is very lightweight and worn                              untucked (similar to a coat/dress shirt), over an undershirt. It is a common                                         wedding and formal attire for Filipino men as well as women. The term "barong                                  Tagalog" literally means "a dress that is Tagalog", or "a Tagalog dress" (i.e.,                          "baro na Tagalog", with "barong" being a contraction of "baro na") in the                              Tagalog language.
The barong was popularized as formal wear by Philippine President                                   Ramon Magsaysay, who wore it to most official and personal affairs, including                              his inauguration as president.
Filipinos don their finest formal barongs in a variety of fabrics.
                                   1.   Piña fabric - is hand-loomed from pineapple leaf fibers. And because Piña                             weavers in the Philippines are dwindling, its scarcity makes the delicate Piña                                  cloth expensive and is thus used for very formal events.
                                   2.   Jusi fabric - is mechanically woven and was once made from abacca or                                   banana silk.
                                   3.   Banana fabric - is another sheer fabric used in formal occasions. Made and                            hand woven from banana fiber, it usually comes with geometric design details.                              This fabric hails from the Visayas island of Negros.
The term "Barong Tagalog" is used almost exclusively to refer to the formal                                 version of the barong; however, less formal variations of this national costume                               also exist.
Polo barong refers to a short-sleeved version of the barong, often made                           with linen, ramie or cotton. This is the least formal version of the barong, often                              used as office wear (akin to the suit and tie).
"Gusot-Mayaman" ("gusot" means "wrinkled" and "mayaman" means                             "wealthy") and Linen barongs are barongs that are not constructed with pina,                               jusi, or similarly delicate fabrics are generally considered less formal than the                                barong Tagalog. Both "gusot-mayaman" and linen barongs are used for                                        everyday office wear.
Shirt-jack barong are cut in shirt-jack style usually in poly-cotton,                                   linen-cotton and gusot-mayaman fabrics. Popularized by politicians and                                          government officials and worn during campaigns or out-in-the-field                                          assignments. This barong style gives the wearer a more casual look yet lends a                                more dressed-up appearance from the usual street worn casual wear.

                       B.        Istrukturang Gramatikal
                                   Grammatical Structure

                                   MGA UNLAPI-Prefixes
                       1.         a. ka- means kasama or togetherness
                                   Example:
                                   Ka+ mag-anak = kamag-anak (kasama sa pamilya) means  Relative
                                 b. The form [ka+first syllable of root verb+root verb] denotes                                                        the recent completive form of the verb.                                                                          Example:
                                    Rootword
Kain               Kakakain - have just finished eating
Kita                kakikita - have just seen

Punta               kapupunta - have just went to
Gawa               kagagawa - have just made

                       2.         a.         ma –can be used to form adjectives from root words but not                                                 all  root words can be turned into ma- adjectives.
                                   Example:

maganda - beautiful (ganda is beauty)
Magandang babae siya. She is a beautiful woman.
                                   ma (unlapi) + ganda (salitang-ugat) = maganda

                                   b.         ma- prefixes can also turn root words into verbs but like                                                almost everything in Tagalog this does not apply to all root                                                      words.
                                               Example:

Matutulog na ako. I will sleep now.                                                                                    Mananalo siya. She will win.
These are verbs that takes the active form by using the prefix                                                ma- and is therefore called a MA- verb. Ma- used as an                                                actor affix and in rare instances as an object affix. Other                                                 verbs take active forms using the prefix [mag-] or the infix                                                   [-um] and are therefore called mag verb and um verbs.
                                               Examples:

                                               Rootword             Past             Present        Future
tulog - to sleep     natulog       natutulog    matutulog
tuto - to learn        natuto        natututo      matututo
kinig - to listen     nakinig        nakikinig   makikinig
nood - to watch     nanood       nanonood    manonood

                                   3.  Pa- prefix
                                                a.        pa- may be seen as the shortened form of the prefix paki-
which when attached to root verbs adds the notion of
request similar to "please" in English.

                                                           Example:

“Patulong” - "please help" as when used in the sentence,

“Patulong naman o..” in English, "please help naman
                                                                              oh.."
                                                           “Paayos” - please arrange/fix

                                               b.         pa- prefix also denotes direction of an object in motion or in
                                                        place.

                                                           Example:

palayo - going further (root word layo from the adjective
                                                              malayo which means far)
palapit - going near (root word lapit from the adjective

                                                                         malapit which means near)
                                                           paabante/pasulong - forward motion

                                                           paatras - backward motion

                                                           paharap - facing forward
                                                           patalikod -facing backward
                                                           pahalang -horizontally
                                                           patayo - vertically
                                                           padiagonal - diagonal/slanting
