“Fiesta”
Original Text
English Translation
Fiesta sa isang bayan
It was a town fiesta
Kami’y nagpunta
We were invited
Pagkat isang tagaroon
As one of the residents there
Mahigpit ang anyaya
Persistently invited us
Ang handaan ay en grande
The party is extravagant
May awitan pa
With singing too
At may mga nagsasayaw
And there were dancers
Sa tugtog na rondalla
 As the rondalla played
Mayro’ng nagkukwentuhan
There were chatting
Na may tuksuhan
With teasing
Mayro’ng habang umiinom
And while drinking
Ay naghahalakhakan
There were lots of laughing
At may kain pa nang kain
And people were continuously eating
Tuloy ang inuman
And drinking as well
Ay sa ganyan ay ano pa
For these what else
Ang ibig mo sa buhay
Would one desire in life
Sa tuwing mayro’ng fiesta talaga
Every time there’s a fiesta celebration
Ako ay nagtataka
I am amazed
Upang kumain nang masarap
To be able to eat delicious food
Ay pinipilit ka pa
You are being cajoled
Maghapong kaina’y nagdaan
When the whole day of feasting is over
Pagkai’y naubos na
And all the food were consumed
Kung bakit itong maybahay
It is indeed a wonder why the hostess
Natuwa pa
Felt exuberantly happy.

A.        Kultural o Historikal na Impormasyon ng Awit
Cultural or Historical Information of the Song

To the Filipino people, fiestas are occasions to get together and be thankful for their blessings as expressed through the lavish preparation of food and their sharing of it with guests.  Filipinos are said to save money all year long to afford the fiestas.  Some families even go to the extent of borrowing money to spend during the fiestas. This is why these cultural get-togethers are criticized.

As mentioned in an earlier lesson, the fiestas are aftermath of Catholic celebrations.  From the family unit to the barangay level, there are expenses for fiestas: sponsorship of mass celebrations, marching bond, sumptuous food, new items for the house such as curtains, etc.

It is the pride of families to have a lot of guests during the fiesta celebrations.  The number of guests becomes the status symbol.  So does the number of dishes presented at the feast table.
